What's a rogue demon?

Minim Calibre has a few ponderings on Buffy/Wes, and how to pull such a thing off.

Keep in mind also what it is they have as common ground. They've both got an extremely practical streak, and both tend to pull away from their friends when they could most use them. They both internalize a lot of things, have unresolved parent issues—not to mention the unresolved Angel issues.

Me, that's what's left.

There's a great look into Buffy's improvised use of weapons and what that says about her by [info]aycheb. I award extra bonus points for referencing Innocence. Which should be referenced at every opportunity.

"In support of this notion, some of Buffy’s most memorable successes are associated with an atypical use of arms. In Innocence she commandeers a rocket launcher to take out the Judge and in Graduation Day 2 uses Faith’s knife not as a weapon, but to lure “Dick” into a library full of explosives, thus exploiting his human weakness for the memory of his protégé. An example of the problems that arise from a more conventional approach can be seen in Prophecy Girl. Trying to follow the Codex to the letter she goes armed with a crossbow that proves completely ineffective against the Master...."

Pesky destiny

violaclaire asks the Buffy/Angel soulmate question. I think what's more interesting is the comments thread with all the different views of what makes a soulmate and whether love is a choice or not. So go read that.
The quote below is from the comments thread rather than the post itself.

"Personally, I don't like the idea of them being "soulmates" in the strictest sense of the word, or them being "destined". They couldn't help but fall in love with each other, certainly, but I don't think that can be equated with "destiny" and I don't think it implies that their love was written in the stars; it was the complete opposite, it was unexpected by everyone - most of all Buffy and Angel. There were far too many obstacles in their relationship, and continue to be to this day, for me to believe that they were "meant to be"...."

Give the girl a break!

Following on from the last post, I found some more interesting reading on the same site. Minim Calibre comes to the defence of Buffy (the character). Not that I think she needs defending, but people in the fic world do seem to harp on about how horrible she is.

"Let's talk about choice, and about how little of it Buffy has had. Unlike some of the other characters who have actively chosen good, good chose her. At that moment, she lost the freedom to make her own choice. Any decision she makes--where to go to school, paper or plastic, Coke or Pepsi, somehow seems to affect the lives of other people...."

It's worth taking a gander 'round the rest of the Perfectly Willing site. It's focus is Buffy/Gunn writing, but there's some interesting reading to be found even if that's not your thing.

Just a quick sacrifice, honestly!

Twinkledru J. examines the self destructive tendancies of Buffy and Gunn.
A pairing that you don't see all that often.

"This tendency, I think, arises from both for the same reason: neither Buffy nor Gunn expects to live very long. There are insects that have longer lifespans than these two expect to have. Gunn grew up in a tough enough neighborhood as it was -- factor in demons and vampires preying on said neighborhood, and you've got a recipe for a short lifespan. Buffy tells Riley that Slayers, as a rule, "don't live past twenty-five" (and by the time she makes that birthday, she'll have died twice, so it's not unreasonable to assume that she's not just being hyperbolic there). These are, in short, two people who don't place a very high value on their own lives...."

Oh, the possibilities!

There's a canon?

Nevernever seems to think that Buffy, Angel and Spike are Inextricably Linked. And that really, characters who are Inextricably Linked should be getting it on.

The blame for the unhealthy dynamics of the relationship overall lies on both their shoulders. I don’t buy Spike as pure innocent abuse victim. I don’t buy Buffy as innocent victim either. They hurt each other, they were shitty to each other, they found each other’s tenderest spots and poked. Hard. For him, it was his twisted concept of love and a desperate attempt to keep her, for her it was an exercise in self hatred and a desire to have someone to pour her bad feelings onto...

There's also some good Fic recs at the end of the essay.

Want. Take. Have hot sweaty... Nevermind.

The nice people over at Blood and Honey have some reasons to write (and believe) Buffy/Faith fic.

"The problem with Buffy/Faith is that it is often just sex. Without plot, without explanation. When you write Buffy/Faith, you're going to have to convince the reader that the pair are compatable in ways that don't involve staking . . . this is sounding wrong before I even finish. Let me start over. Buffy was a virgin before she and Angel made love one time in "Surprise." ..."

Who needs a Soul anyway?

Kimberly thinks that Spike shouldn't have needed a Soul in order to be loveable.

"His voice was that of everyone who has ever felt that if they could just fix this one thing -- no matter what it is -- then everything would be okay. They would be loved. They would be accepted. They would fit..."

Grr, Arg! I need a hug..

There's some interesting reading to be had over at ShadowKat's place. She talks about the difference between Buffy and Xander when dealing with the Monsters. The real ones, and the internal ones.

"Xander clearly thinks on a deep subconscious level that Buffy prefers the Beast. She doesn't. She's afraid of the Beast in both herself and in the men she is attracted to. But she is more afraid of it in herself. She's also afraid - and here's the kicker - that she brings it out in her men. In Innocence (Season 2) the scene that continues to break my heart is the one after Angel turns evil, in which she asks Jenny - if it was her. If she was responsible. If she caused Angel to turn and Jenny says, hesitantly, she thinks so. Later with Riley, when she discovers him with the vamp trulls, she feels the same sense of revulsion and fear and also, although she denies it, blames herself..."

How they've grown...

The folks over at With Character have a bunch of essays looking at how some of the scoobies handle themselves through each season. Some interesting reading, with varying levels of insight from the different authors. Most focus on the early seasons, but some (Like the Xander essay by  Bastardsnow) go as far as season five.

"... Buffy ends the season much as she started it. A little older, yes. A little wiser, I’m not so sure. Instead of learning from the fallout of keeping secrets and talking to her friends and family, she leaves them behind again, shutting them out of her life. "
