I wrote my thesis on you!

Some interesting reading on William The Bloody.

This thesis is based on Lydia the Watcher's line in the episode "Checkpoint" (Buffy season 5). On first meeting Spike she says in awe, "I wrote my thesis on you!"

We submit this collaborative effort as the thesis Lydia wrote. We have given her the last name Chalmers. Since we imagine this thesis to have been completed in May of 1998, any information about Spike or Sunnydale which has appeared since then will not have been available to her.

By Jove!

Cousinjean over on the Fanged Four site has some sensible advice on writing Spike.

"... Spike's a creative guy, and doesn't tend to use nicknames - especially those meant as insults - more than once (this doesn't apply to pet names and terms of endearment, i.e. Pet, Red, Nibblet, etc.). As for example? "Peaches." Spike called Angel this exactly one time, ever, in "Lover's Walk." Yet according to fanon (that is, things that are used so often in fanfic that they become mistaken for canon), it's practically the only thing Spike ever calls Angel. In truth, he's called Angel many and varied things over the years, and has never used the same nickname or insult more than once. So be creative! Spike puts a lot of thought into his name-calling. You owe it to him to do the same...."

There's also a handy Britspeak reference guide located here, incase you might need it. Speaking as an actual bona fide British person, it's mostly accurate. But bear in mind, Spike is really quite American, so don't go over the top.

In Other News: Season Towers is back to the normal running of things now. Over the past month a pesky law degree, the return of The Worst Flu Known To Man, husbandly duties and a hectic real life have all conspired to delay updating. But fear no more, all has been resolved. Or at least put off to a later date (not the husbandly duties though, obviously).
So expect regular updating to The Writers Room, as well as a practical deluge of new bits.

A Bitch of Love.

Elynross over at the Fanfic Symposium isn't that impressed with neutered Spike.

"When we do stupid things, (and Buffy had been doing incredibly stupid things in playing with Spike, since the only thing that we know kept him in check was the chip) we suffer the consequences, even when those consequences shouldn't happen. Play with fire, get burned, etc. She forgot Spike was fire, and she got burned.

I've seen people object to the attempted rape, or indicate that it wasn't so bad, on the grounds that Buffy was strong enough to get away at any time. It played entirely realistically to me, having been in a situation where you freeze because you simply can't believe what's happening. I'm not talking rape, exactly, but a situation where physical strength isn't really an issue in the moment because you can't really believe what's happening to you. Where the games you play suddenly take a frightening turn and things are real. That's what I read from Buffy, and ultimately, she did stop him, but that doesn't mitigate the fact that Spike was attempting it, and we really don't know if he would have stopped. Ultimately, responsibility isn't a zero sum, where if I accord Buffy any responsibility in the events leading up to that, it somehow reduces the responsibility of her attacker, or makes the whole frightening thing any better. I really can't wrap my mind around how liking Spike can change that, but then, as I said, the attack didn't seem at all out of character to me, given what I'd seen and thought all season. This is another of those areas where I just have to face that fact that I'm watching a different show than many other people....."

It was very obviously written whilst Buffy was on air still, so some of the points wither with hindsight. But it makes for some interesting reading.

Family, eh?

There's not a whole lot of slash advice here on The Season Towers LiveJournal it has to be admitted. This is mostly because the boysex does nothing in particular for me. However, today I stumbled accross a mostly excellent bit of meandering on the topic of Spike and Angel by [info]romanyg.

"ANGEL
What if you did? Look, Wolfram & Hart has got offices in every major city in the world, and a lot more out of it. I'll give you the resources you need to go anywhere: cars, gadgets, expense accounts. You fight the good fight, but... in style.
(sits on the edge of his desk)
And, if possible, in Outer Mongolia.

--"A Hole in the World", AtS 5x15

This exchange is all very funny, but what we need to remember is that this takes place after Cordy dies, after Angel has his vision. Here, we see Angel actually beginning to enjoy Spike's company. He knows that if Spike stays, he dies. Could it be possible that he wants to save him? Send him away, so that Connor isn't the only piece of him that continues? Angel firmly believes that they're both hellbound. Could it be that he wants to grant Spike a stay, if only for a little while?

But Spike can tell something's coming; he refuses to go. And Angel needs him; he doesn't try to send him away again.

You see, this has nothing to do with true love, who gets the girl in the end. This relationship doesn't take away from the one either has with Buffy. What happens here is deeper, older than that. It's about need, acceptance, forgiveness. It's not about sunsets, only endings.

So, stop me if you've heard this one: A god, a wounded man, and two vampires walk into an alley...."

And really, this is less a meandering on slash, and much more a meandering on the dynamic of the two characters in canon. I urge you to go read, even the boysex averse of you.

If you'd like to help expand The Season Towers LiveJournal content to all sorts of other things that don't do anything in particular for me, then check out the shiny new Frequently Asked Questions section on Season2Ep14.net. It has a whole section dedicated to The Writers Room, and how you can help out. Come on, all the cool kids are doing it.

There's a canon?

Nevernever seems to think that Buffy, Angel and Spike are Inextricably Linked. And that really, characters who are Inextricably Linked should be getting it on.

The blame for the unhealthy dynamics of the relationship overall lies on both their shoulders. I don’t buy Spike as pure innocent abuse victim. I don’t buy Buffy as innocent victim either. They hurt each other, they were shitty to each other, they found each other’s tenderest spots and poked. Hard. For him, it was his twisted concept of love and a desperate attempt to keep her, for her it was an exercise in self hatred and a desire to have someone to pour her bad feelings onto...

There's also some good Fic recs at the end of the essay.

Who needs a Soul anyway?

Kimberly thinks that Spike shouldn't have needed a Soul in order to be loveable.

"His voice was that of everyone who has ever felt that if they could just fix this one thing -- no matter what it is -- then everything would be okay. They would be loved. They would be accepted. They would fit..."

I did a bad, bad thing...

Slain by Buffy has some interesting things to say about good and bad in the Buffy'verse, 'specially the specifics of innately evil characters and what makes them so. There's quite a bit of Spike comparison going on, but other characters are also mentioned.

"Similarly, 'accidental' vampires like Harmony, which weren't carefully chosen, are not evil is the same way as Angelus and Darla. While Harmony is evil, her link with her human self is much clearer. She feels no remorse at killing, but the morals of her human life still effect her unlife: thus she wanted to be good. In the episode 'Disharmony', Harmony feels the need to drink Cordelia, but she is still bound by the friendship in a way that Jesse wasn't towards Xander. Perhaps the circumstances of the turning make a difference, but I would argue that it is the vampire's human mind, not their soul, which determines much of the path they take as an immortal. As such, Spike is not born to be bad, and he has a chance at being good. While other vampires lack any real motivation for seeking redemption, in his bizarre love for Buffy, Spike has found a reason..."

As an aside, there's also a neat little bit on Angel and Noirishness.

Is it hot in here?

Nemi has a whole lot of advice for those of you writing sex scenes of a distinctly male slash variety (She writes with Angel and Spike in mind, but it's applicable elsewhere). Some good advice, and some tips that, as a reader, I find annoying as hell. Like the names thing.

"... use other words instead of their names. Don't just call them 'Angel' and 'Spike' or 'he.' That's how terrible confusion is created. Call them 'the older vampire', 'the dark-haired man', 'the peroxide-blonde' ..."

It's probably safe to say that the link isn't maybe all that work friendly. - I find the George Michael reference especially disturbing.
Although I suppose that depends on where you work.
